The Investment Company Institute's The Fundamentals of Mutual Funds is a two-part course designed to help you to understand the nature and organization of mutual funds. When you complete Parts I and II of The Fundamentals of Mutual Funds, you should be well prepared to answer investors’ questions about mutual funds. The course is designed for employees of mutual fund organizations, banks, broker/dealers, service providers to the fund industry, and others who want to gain a fundamental understanding of mutual funds.

OBJECTIVE

Upon completion of Part I of The Fundamentals of Mutual Funds, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what a mutual fund is.
  2. Discuss why people invest in mutual funds.
  3. Respond to investors’ questions about the relationship between risk and reward.
  4. Describe and differentiate types of investment risk.
  5. Discuss common types of securities in which mutual funds invest.
  6. Explain how a mutual fund determines its per share net asset value and, if applicable, its offering price and bid price.
  7. Discuss how mutual funds value portfolio securities.
  8. Answer investors’ questions about mutual fund sales charges, fees, and expenses.
  9. Explain how investors purchase, redeem, and exchange shares.
