The Investment Company Institute's The Fundamentals of Mutual Funds is a two-part course designed to help you to understand the nature and organization of mutual funds. When you complete Parts I and II of The Fundamentals of Mutual Funds, you should be well prepared to answer investors’ questions about mutual funds. The course is designed for employees of mutual fund organizations, banks, broker/dealers, service providers to the fund industry, and others who want to gain a fundamental understanding of mutual funds.

OBJECTIVE

Upon completion of Part II of The Fundamentals of Mutual Funds, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss mutual fund distributions with investors.
  2. Answer questions about how investors can make money investing in mutual funds.
  3. Differentiate and discuss a mutual fund’s total return, average annual total return, after-tax return, and yield.
  4. Discuss how mutual funds are organized.
  5. Explain the role of a mutual fund sponsor, board of directors, and investment adviser.
  6. Describe and differentiate the role of a mutual fund underwriter, wholesaler, custodian, and transfer agent.
  7. Explain what a registered representative is.
  8. Respond to investors’ questions about how mutual funds are regulated.
  9. Explain shareholder voting rights and what a proxy is.
  10. Find key information in the mutual fund prospectus, Statement of Additional Information, and shareholder report and help investors to do the same.
  11. Read newspaper fund tables.
  12. Discuss the role mutual fund rankings and ratings play in the fund industry.
